We are pleased to announce that three of the Tolberts are back in school…though maybe not the three that you would imagine. Anna Kate just finished her third full week of school at the local public school. She has had a wonderful time and made several friends. Her success has been another answer to prayer as all of her classes are in Latvian (with the exception of her English class). She is one of only two students in the school that does not know Latvian. However, she has been extremely courageous and gone each day with a smile on her face. She had exams last week before their fall break and she is a little sad to not have school this week.
Some of the prayers that we have seen answered are:
- A teacher who has been welcoming and extremely helpful. She has even volunteered to stay after school on Tuesdays and help her on Latvian.
- Anna Kate has been able to make some new friends and enjoys going to school each day.
- Another answer to prayer are new friends here who have given her rides to school every day and then also pick her up most days.
Patty and I are also studying Latvian every morning with a tutor. On a typical day (so far) we spend about 2.5 hours with our tutor studying grammar, reading aloud, taking test/quizzes, trying to make conversation with our new words, etc. Then we spend another 4 hours or so working on homework, memorizing vocabulary, and trying to work on our grammar. If you want to be able to sympathize with our labors, you can check out the Wikipedia article on Latvian Grammar.
Caroline and Eleanor are not yet in school. We are waiting to hear some more details about whether we will be getting a vehicle in the coming weeks as that affects where and when we enroll them in school. Please pray for us this week as we try to make some of these decisions while catching up on our own language studies.
