While all schools in Latvia were shut down on March 12, the kindergartens were allowed to reopen in May for children who were preparing to go to first grade in the fall. Eleanor was very excited to be able to go back and see her teachers and classmates again. Our kindergarten actually chose to extend the school year for six-year-olds until later in June to give them more preparation time. June 19 was Eleanor’s last day at the kindergarten that has been such a special part of her life for the past two and a half years. It is here that she learned to speak and then read and write in Latvian, learned to make friends, learned to dance, and became part of a new culture. We are so thankful for this special place and each and every teacher that has loved our little girl. Here is a picture of Eleanor on her first and last days at this school. Kindergarten graduation is quite a big event in Latvia. The children wear quite formal attire, the girls often get their hair and nails professionally done, the graduates perform intricate dances, songs, and poems, and then there are usually big celebrations for the children and families. This year, due to COVID restrictions, the parents were not allowed to come into the kindergarten to watch the performance, so it was videoed and livestreamed. Luke, however, was one of the videographers, so he was able to watch the performance in person! After the concert, the children were surprised with a field trip followed by a garden party where they met up with all of the families. Here are several pictures from our wonderful day celebrating Eleanor!
