2 Thoughts on “18 month check-up!”

  • my sister in law has a baby the exact same age as Eowyn, and both she and he have had really bad eczema off and on. Just before they did some huge allergy testing (eczema is a big warning sign of food allergy, especially gluten!), she got herself skin tested and found she is allergic to formaldehyde (I mean, who wouldn't be, seeing as it's used to preserve dead things?), which is in overwhelming amounts of skin products. http://planetgreen.discovery.com/food-health/formaldehyde-is-one-of-those.html I know Johnsons & Johnsons Baby Wash has it for sure. She switched to natural products like Burt's Bees. Natural shampoo bars are great for avoiding this. http://www.applevalleynaturalsoap.com/ is a great company! I do make our detergent (super easy) but it doesn't work long-term for diapers in our area's hard water, so I'm thinking of trying soap nuts. I've heard they eliminate allergies too. They're fairly economical and totally natural!

Another friend was controlling her eczema with a gluten-free diet, then found she was actually allergic to soap itself– I forget which chemical compound. She switched to Cetaphil and it totally cleared up. I'd try the natural stuff first, though, because it still contains sodium lauryl sulfate, which I try to avoid.

  • Thomas has eczema too. Our doc recommends the plain Dove Beauty Bar for baths every other day and Eucerin lotion daily. I only use the medicated lotion on breakouts. For detergent, I use All Free and Clear, but I would like to hear more about making your own!
